Calibration of Refractometer:
1.Objective:
To lay down a procedure for calibration of Refractometer.
2. Scope:
This procedure is applicable to Quality control laboratory for make Anton Paar and Rudolph.
3. Responsibilities:
Role | Responsibility | Department |
Analyst/Team Leader | Calibration of Refractometer | Quality Control |
Reviewer/ Reviewer Team Leader | Review of reports | AQA/Lab QA |
Head of Department | Ensuring compliance of this SOP | Quality Control |
4. Procedure:
- Wipe the instrument with lint free cloth till visually clean.
- Ensure the power supply and the interface cable connecting the measuring unit are properly connected.
- Ensure that the instrument is clean before measuring the sample.
- Never overfill the sample well.
- Sample on prism shall be free from air bubbles.
- After measurement, sample must be removed and wipe off immediately with tissue paper.
- After wiping the sample from sample well, wipe again with water incase of water base sample.
- For Non water base samples wipe with organic chemicals like Acetone, IPA or Ethanol.
Procedure for Calibration of Refractometer:
Following calibration parameters mentioned for Anton Paar make instrument:
Calibration with reference standard:
Calibrate the instrument using any one of the reference standard at 20°C ± 0.5 °C.
1. Chlorobenzene 2. Tetrachloroethylene
In case of non availability of standards, alternate certified reference standard shall be used with acceptance criteria of ± 0.0001 to certified value.
Acceptance Criteria:
Refractive index of reference standard at 20°C shall be ± 0.0001 to certified value.
Calibration with Purified Water:
Calibrate the instrument using purified water at 20°C ± 0.5 °C.
Acceptance Criteria:
Refractive index of purified water at 20°C shall be 1.33290 to 1.33310.
Temperature variation at 20°C:
Verify the refractive index of water at 20°C ± 0.5 °C
Acceptance Criteria:
Refractive index of purified water at 20°C shall be 1.33290 to 1.33310.
Temperature variation at 25°C:
Verify the refractive index of water at 25°C ± 0.5 °C
Acceptance Criteria:
Refractive index of purified water at 25°C shall be 1.33240 to 1.33260.
Following calibration parameters mentioned for Rodolph Instrument:
Calibration with Reference standard:
Calibrate the instrument using the laser liquid 20°C ± 0.5 °C
Acceptance Criteria:
Refractive index of laser liquid standard at 20°C shall be ± 0.0001 nD to the certified value.
Frequency of Calibration:
Once in six months or after maintenance major job as per service engineer recommendation.
