What is Flame Photometer Principle in pharma?

Flame Photometer Principle:

Flame photometer is widely used technique to determine the concentration of alkali or alkaline earth metals, such as Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Barium, Lithium. Flame photometry is quantitative technique to analyzed the elements.

Here is the Flame Photometer Principle:

When a metal is introduced into a flame, the Flame Photometer is measure the intensity of emitted light . The color of the flame provides the information about the amount of the elements present in the sample and wavelength of the color provides information about the element present in the sample.

Flame Photometer Principle:

When the element comes in contact with flame, it measures the intensity of emitted light (wavelength of the color).

Working principle of Flame photometer:

  1. Sample Introduction: By using automizer sample solution introduced into the flame. Sample solution shall be aspirated or nebulized to ensure fine spray to get efficient atomization result.
  2. Atomization and Desolvation: When the sample enters into the flame it get evaporates and releases the ions or atoms. These atoms or ions further get excites due to high temperature flame.
  3. Emission of Light: At specific wavelengths the excited atoms or ions emits the light. It indicates the elements are present in the sample.
  4. Selection of Wavelength: A monochromator selects a preferred wavelength of light emitted by the sample.
  5. Detection and Measurement: A detector captures the selected wavelength of light and transmit it into the electric signal. Signal processor measures the intensity of signals, that is proportional to the concentration of elements present in the sample of solution.
  6. Quantitative Analysis: To determine the concentration of the element in the sample solution, the measured signal is compared to calibration curves or standards.
